Description

The VADEN ORIGINAL 1100 330 001 is a single-cylinder, water-cooled air brake compressor built as a like-for-like replacement for the Detroit Diesel DD15 application. It supplies compressed air to the vehicle service and parking brake circuits, the suspension and every other pneumatic control on the truck, and is built with a water-cooled cylinder head, through-drive capability and the ESS energy saving system. It ships as a complete new unit with no core charge and no core return to arrange.

A note on how compressors are rated, because catalogues are not consistent about it. Theoretical displacement is swept volume multiplied by crankshaft speed. Delivered air is what actually reaches the reservoirs at working pressure, and it is always lower, because volumetric efficiency falls as discharge pressure rises. A compressor quoted at delivered air will always look smaller than the same compressor quoted at theoretical displacement. When comparing two units, make sure both numbers are on the same basis and at the same rpm.

How to identify the right unit before ordering

Check four things on the compressor being replaced. First, the OE number stamped on the body, which is the only reliable identifier. Second, single or twin cylinder: a twin-cylinder unit has two discharge ports and a visibly wider crankcase. Third, cooling: a water-cooled head has two coolant ports, an air-cooled head has finned castings and none. Fourth, the drive end: a through-drive unit passes drive through to an accessory behind it and has a machined rear flange, and it cannot be substituted with a non-through-drive unit.

Symptoms of a failing air compressor

The most common complaint is slow air build-up: the truck takes noticeably longer to reach governor cut-out, or the low-air warning stays on longer than it used to after start-up. Others are frequent cycling because the compressor cannot keep ahead of demand, oil in the air system, a discharge line running hotter than normal, knocking under load, coolant loss with no external leak, and an air dryer that purges far more often than it should. Oil carryover is the failure mode that costs the most downstream, because oil and carbon contaminate the dryer cartridge, the valves and the modulators, so a compressor left in service too long turns a single-component repair into an air-system overhaul.

Check these before condemning the compressor

Slow air build-up is not always the compressor, so work through the cheap causes first. Test the governor at the cut-in and cut-out pressures and confirm it is actually unloading. Check the unloader assembly and its supply line. Inspect the discharge line for carbon restriction: a partially blocked line looks exactly like a worn compressor from the driver seat, and it is also the classic sign that the compressor is passing oil. Check the air dryer purge valve and the condition of the desiccant cartridge, and check for leaks across the reservoirs, the lines and the chambers. Replacing a compressor without fixing a restricted discharge line or a saturated dryer simply destroys the new unit as well.

The compliance side: FMVSS 121 and CVSA

On a vehicle basis, FMVSS 121 (49 CFR 571.121 S5.1.1) requires the air system to build from 85 to 100 psi within 25 seconds at maximum governed engine speed, scaled by the ratio of actual to required reservoir capacity. A typical heavy truck governor cuts out near 120 to 130 psi and cuts back in near 100 psi. This matters commercially as well as technically: a compressor that has lost capacity will usually show up as a build-up-time or low-air-warning defect at a roadside CVSA inspection, and put the unit out of service, before it ever leaves a driver stranded. Build-up time is worth checking as part of scheduled PM rather than waiting for a complaint.

Replace complete, or rebuild?

Both are legitimate and the right answer depends on labour cost. In a US shop, replacing the complete unit is usually the lower total cost of repair once bench time is priced in, and a new complete unit avoids the core deposit, the return freight and the risk of a core being rejected that come with an exchange unit. Component-level rebuild makes sense where the bench capacity exists, where the crankcase and crankshaft are sound, or where the failure is confined to the head, the valve plate or the unloader.
